The list of the largest German-speaking cities provides an overview of the population of the major German-speaking cities . Cities that belong to the German-speaking area are listed.
Big cities
According to a definition of the International Statistics Conference of 1887, all cities with at least 100,000 inhabitants are referred to as large cities. In 2010 there were around 4,000 large cities worldwide. In German-speaking countries there are currently 90 cities with over 100,000 inhabitants, the largest proportion of which is in Germany. As of 2012 there have been 76 large cities in Germany, 28 of which (37%) are in North Rhine-Westphalia. Four are metropolises , another nine have more than half a million inhabitants. Austria has six major cities, including Vienna, a city of millions. About 1/4 of the Austrian population lives in the greater Vienna area (2.6 million people). There are four major German-speaking cities in Switzerland, other languages are not included in the list. In France there are two large cities, some of which are German-speaking, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. Luxembourg and Italy (South Tyrol) each have a (partially) German-speaking city.
