As early as September 10, 1380, there was documentary evidence of the construction of a chapel by the Archbishop of Cologne , Friedrich III. from Saar Werden to the area of today's district of St. Tönis. Lt. the inscription above the tower portal shows that construction of the church tower could begin on May 31, 1483. In 1585 the tower collapsed due to the effects of the war and buried parts of the vault under itself, only on April 18, 1619 could the new construction of the tower begin. In the following armed conflicts, the church was destroyed several times and poorly repaired; it was not until 1851 that the church was completely restored. Six years later, the church was expanded according to the plans of the Cologne builder Friedrich Schmidt . On June 6, 1942, an aerial bomb damaged the church and most of the houses on the church square were destroyed. In 1947 the restored church was consecrated. In 1960 new glass windows by the Krefeld artist Gustav Fünders were added to the building.
