Waldniel | Roman Catholic community | St. Michael (Schwalmtaldom) | Markt 15, 41366 Schwalmtal | 1255/1878 to 1883 | The first parish in Waldniel was probably founded at the end of the 7th or beginning of the 8th century. The first written mention of the parish comes from the year 1255, there was probably a simple (wooden) assembly building here. The first known church building can be dated to the middle of the 14th century, but in the middle of the 19th century it was in a desolate state. The foundation stone for a new 3-aisled neo-Gothic brick basilica (according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Wiethase ) was laid on 09/29/1878, the inauguration took place on 05/01/1883. A year later the church got its four-part bell, (again) a year later the church tower (a four-storey square west tower in front of it, which merges into the polygon; it is decorated with brick pilaster strips) got a clock. The interior was restored in 1953, and between 1957 and 1958 the reliquary , the baptismal font , the altar table , the ambo and sediles (all works by the Cologne artist Egino Weinert ) were intrigued into the interior. In the 1950s, the three choirs received new stained glass from Walter Benner , and from 1975 to 1984, fundamental exterior and interior restoration was carried out, with the old paintings being returned to the church. From 2004 the spire was resurfaced, and the sacred works of art were also freed from the “ravages of time”.

Waldniel | Roman Catholic community | St. Mary of the Assumption | Waldnieler Heide 12, 41366 Schwalmtal | 1976 | After the first efforts to build an own church in the former parish of Kirspel-Waldniel failed at the beginning of the 19th century, an independent pastoral rector's district was set up on 01.01.1947 under the name Mariae Himmelfahrt, but it did not have its own church. On October 1st, 1958, the pastoral care district was parished out, and the St. Josefsheim's asylum church could be leased. As the renovation costs of the institutional church increased more and more, the lease was terminated in 1985. A purchase of the institutional church was already rejected on July 14th, 1975, on February 24th, 1976 the building permit for the new church (according to the plans of the architect Josef Pillen) was applied for from the district of Viersen. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 20, 1976 and the foundation stone was laid on November 28, 1976. The inauguration took place on June 18th, 1978, the bell tower (again according to the plans of the architect Josef Pillen) could be built from the end of 1989.
