overview
The country consists of the islands of Antigua and Barbuda (and the remote uninhabited island Redonda ), in the middle section of the island chain of the West Indies , as one of the more northerly of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles .
Both islands are of volcanic origin, but in comparison to the other Antilles islands they are relatively old and therefore without a pronounced central mountain range. They are surrounded by the shallow sea of the submarine base and by mature coral reefs , which protects against erosion and supplies the beaches with the famous pure white sand, which is slightly pink on Barbuda.
The island's beaches form the economic base of the small state, but tourism in Antigua and Barbuda is not as pronounced as on other Caribbean islands. The development only started in the 1980s. Under Lester Bird , however, the development of tourism infrastructure was intensively promoted, partly with high land consumption, which also meant that some of the most important mangrove swamps on Antigua were sacrificed. At times, the exploitation of sand was also carried out - in the mid-1990s, Barbuda was the main source of construction sand in the eastern Caribbean. Due to the lack of mountains, both islands have no orographic cloud and little accumulation of precipitation, which has affected the important littoral freshwater reserves. In the 1990s, an ecological and oppositional protest movement arose, with some violent protests against new building projects. Nevertheless, can be found on both islands untapped beaches, in 1988 eight beaches were as unerschliessbar declared (by Parliament Undeveloped Beaches , beach reserves ). In view of the rising sea level caused by global warming and for environmental reasons , more focus is now being placed on protecting beaches . The rethinking process was triggered by Hurricane Luis in September 1995, which caused severe coastal damage. In some areas there is permanent loss of land on the beaches. Since the mid-2000s there has been further expansion, but more in the sense of a quality tourism integrated into the regional structure ( soft tourism ).
Beaches are in principle public property (state land) and freely accessible, in some cases also privately owned. Topless in public is considered offensive.
Antigua
Antigua is the more mountainous of the two islands ( Mount Obama , ex Boggy Peak , 402 m ), and the coast is relatively richly structured, with offshore islands, some deep, harbor - suitable fjord-like bays, otherwise typical with lateral cliffs and a crescent-shaped beach in front of the tropical forest (more open crescent beaches and deeply recessed pocket beaches ). The northeast coast is flat, swampy to rocky, with only a few larger, but numerous small sandy beaches. The bays on the east, north-west and north coast facing the open Atlantic are considered rougher than those on the Caribbean interior, but are partly well protected by offshore reefs.
The island boasts - as a popular advertising slogan - “365 beaches, one for each day of the year.” The following list gives the larger beaches.

Barbuda
Barbuda is a flat, sparsely populated island with a barely indented coast. It is almost completely lined by the beach, lined with palm trees or in front of bushland. Due to the lack of water, the beaches are not habitable, so there are only a few tourist businesses and they are considered to be particularly unpolluted and natural.
The island is known for its pink beaches, which get their delicate tint from ground corals and foraminifera; it is particularly evident at the waterline.
