The courtly chivalric novel Tirant lo Blanc , mainly written by Joanot Martorell and finished by Martí Joan de Galba , is published in Valencia in the Old Catalan language . Due to its sharp realism, it is considered the cornerstone of the modern novel and is later described by Miguel de Cervantes, among others, as the “best book ever written”.

On February 12, 16-year-old Isabella d'Este , daughter of Ercole I d'Este , Duke of Ferrara , and granddaughter of King Ferdinand I of Naples, is married to Gianfrancesco II Gonzaga , Marquis of Mantua . Since her husband was serving as a military commander in the service of the Republic of Venice at that time , she took over government affairs. Under her patronage, the Court of Mantua developed into one of the cultural centers of Europe in the following years.
