Colored first edition of the Romweg map
  • The earliest road map of Central Europe is the Romwegkarte printed by Erhard Etzlaub on the occasion of the holy year in 1500 . The map, entitled This is the Rome route to meylen of meylen with puncten recorded by eyner stat to the other by deutzsche landt., Like all cards Etzlaubs gesüdet (south is at the top), three directions are with Sunrise, lunch and Undergang labeled. The course of the road is shown and the distances between the cities can be measured by means of points at a distance of one German mile (7.4 km).
