The Littorina is a German research cutter . The ship belongs to the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is operated by the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) together with the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . The ship is managed by Offcon in Kappeln in cooperation with the NSB Niederelbe Schiffahrtsgesellschaft in Buxtehude .

History and commitment

The cutter was built in 1974/75 under construction number 125 at the Julius Diedrich shipyard in Oldersum . The keel was laid on November 23, 1974, the launch took place on April 18, 1975. The ship was completed in June and put into service on June 27, 1975. The cutter, which cost 3.4 million DM, was built for the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 95 (“Interactions between seawater and seabed”) of the German Research Foundation (DFG), which also financed the construction to cover the charter costs incurred until then for ships to catch.

After the end of the collaborative research center, the University of Kiel took over the ship.

Today the cutter, which has an operating radius of around 2,000  nautical miles , is used for marine research and sampling in shallow water areas up to a depth of 500 meters. In addition to the five-person crew, it offers space for six scientists on multi-day trips. For one-day trips, there is space for up to twelve scientists on board. The main areas of use are the North and Baltic Seas , but the cutter can also be used in the English Channel and along the Norwegian coast to the Lofoten Islands .

Technical data and equipment

The cutter is driven by a twelve - cylinder four - stroke diesel engine from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (type: SBA 12 M 816 U) with an output of 418  kW , which acts on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The cutter is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster . Two MWM diesel generators (type: D 226-4) are available for the power supply on board .

On the main deck below the bridge there is a laboratory, the galley and other functional rooms . The engine room , seven chambers for the crew and scientists as well as a lounge are located on the intermediate deck below the main deck .

The Littorina is equipped with a diving room with a compressor. A rubber dinghy is also available on board. This makes the cutter suitable for courses and work by the research diving group at the Institute for Geosciences at the University of Kiel.

An NMF crane is used as a lifting tool on the open main deck . A 10-foot container can also be carried on deck, which can be used as a storage or laboratory container.

Others

The cutter is named after the periwinkle whose scientific name is Littorina .

In addition to the research cutter Littorina , GEOMAR also operates the research vessels Alkor and Poseidon as well as the research boat Arctic Fox .
