The Arctic Fox is a German research boat . The owner is the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . The ship is operated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel , the ship management is carried out by RF Forschungsschiffahrt GmbH in Bremen.
history
The boat was built in 1982 at the Fr. Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG shipyard in Berne -Motzen as a laboratory dinghy for the research vessel Polarstern . The keel was laid in April, the launch and completion of the boat in October 1982. In 1996 the boat was taken off board and replaced by a modern boat, as it was difficult to launch in rough seas and it no longer met the requirements of a modern lifeboat . The aluminum hull was also not suitable for work in the ice.
In 1997 came arctic fox to replace the 1966-built barge Sagitta the Institute for Marine Research Kiel (with the current successor institute GEOMAR) after in January of the year for the new task in the coastal area of the Baltic Sea had been converted.

The boat, which has an operating radius of 60 nautical miles , is mainly used for marine-ecological research and teaching in the waters of the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast ( Kiel Förde , Eckernförder and Lübeck Bay , in the Schlei and around Fehmarn ). It has u. a. via a stern boom and a cargo boom on the foredeck as well as a multi-purpose laboratory room .
The boat of two powered four-stroke engines , each with 57 kW power of Daimler-Benz . The motors act on one propeller each .
