Lyubov Harkavy-Landau
Lyubov Veniaminovna Harkavy-Landau , originally Blüma-Zirl Harkavy ( Russian Любовь Вениаминовна Гаркави-Ландау, первоначально Блюма-Цирл Гаркави ; born October 8 . Jul / 20th October 1877 greg. Life
Harkavy came from a poor Jewish family and was the daughter of Benjamin Harkavy and his wife Beile. She attended the girls' high school in Mogilev . She then gave tutoring and taught in a private school in Bobruisk. In October 1896 she began studying at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich . In August 1897 she had to return to Mogilev due to a lack of funds. In 1898 she succeeded in obtaining permission to leave the pale of settlement intended for Jews , so that in September 1898 she entered the Imperial Institute for Obstetrics in St. Petersburg .
After graduating in 1899 Harkavy worked in the St. Petersburg Women's Medical Institute as associate staff member of the Department füre physiology and as an assistant of the Institute prosector . She also ran an obstetrics practice.
In 1905 Harkavy married the engineer of the Caspian-Black Sea Joint-Stock Company Dawid Lwowitsch Landau (1866-1943), so that she was now called Lyubow Weniaminowna Harkavy-Landau. The family lived in Baku . She ran a private practice for obstetrics and gynecological diseases in Balachany and then worked as a doctor at the Baku girls' high school. During the First World War in 1915/16 she was a doctor in the hospital in Baku . Then she taught natural history in the new Jewish high school.
After the October Revolution , she was a gynecologist at the Great Soviet Congress of Petroleum Industries . Harkavy taught physiology , anatomy and pharmacology in the Sisters and Field Shears courses of the Red Army , the General Education School and the Military School of the Azerbaijan Army, the Baku Medical School, the College of Popular Education, the RabFak and the Azerbaijani Agricultural Institute. From the summer semester of 1920, she worked at the Department of Physiology at Baku University . She published work on experimental pharmacology. As a research assistant in the experimental department of the laboratory at the Lenin Clinic for Cardiology in Kislovodsk , she carried out a series of investigations into the effects of dolomite - seltzer water there on the metabolism.
In 1930 Dawid Landau was arrested as part of the so-called oil workers-vermin affair . Harkavy returned to Leningrad and worked at the Department of Physiology at the First Leningrad Medical Institute until her death .
Harkavy's son was the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Lev Dawidowitsch Landau . Her daughter Sofya Dawidowna Landau (1906-1971) married Sigusch (Sigismund Mironovich) Broderson (1903-1964), one of the founders of the Central Polsunow - Turbine Institute and brother of poet Moishe Broderson . Their daughter, Harkavy's granddaughter, Ella Sigelewna Ryndina (* 1933) became a physicist at the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna .
