The Loft is a performance venue for jazz , improvised and contemporary composed music in Cologne-Ehrenfeld . The concert hall and the adjoining recording studio are located on the third floor of a former perfume factory.

In 1986, Hans-Martin Müller , flautist and then lecturer at the Cologne University of Music , founded the loft in a backyard factory room near the Cologne University of Music. In 1987 he moved the loft to Cologne-Ehrenfeld; Since September 1989, after another move, concerts (and initially also exhibitions) have taken place at Wissmannstrasse 30.

From the beginning, the loft was also a place for contemporary composed music - there were concerts with the entire piano works of Karlheinz Stockhausen (1997) and Mauricio Kagel , portrait concerts (for example by Frederic Rzewski ), chamber music concerts and “workshops” of the same House located Cologne Society for New Music .

As a venue for creative jazz and improvised music, the loft has gained a national reputation and is also used as part of the Cologne Music Triennale ; the SWR New Jazz Meeting 2012 was led by Carl Ludwig Hübsch u. a. aligned in the loft. The Guardian listed the loft in a list of the 10 best jazz clubs in Europe in 2016.

The connected recording studio uses the concert room as a recording location. This results in the possibility of studio quality concert recordings, which Deutschlandfunk and WDR also used for live recordings. In the Cologne loft there are also numerous albums by musicians such as Urs Leimgruber , Misha Mengelberg , Perry Robinson , Simon Nabatov ( Sneak Preview 1999 and Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols 2007), Lauren Newton , Hans Lüdemann , Frank Gratkowski , Angelika Niescier , Joe Maneri , Stephan Mattner , Pascal Niggenkemper , Irene Schweizer and the German Clarinet Duo . Andreas Schaerer / Lucas Niggli ( Arcanun ), Martin Blume ( Frames & Terrain ), Jacob Anderskov ( Mysteries: Kinetics Live In Cologne ) and Janning Trumann / Fabian Willmann ( Trillmann Live ) also recorded there in the 2010s .
