history
The area around Longtown was first settled between 1817 and 1820 by settlers of European descent who had come to Missouri from North Carolina and settled in the region around Longtown and Brazeau . In 1826 the settlers erected a log cabin in the Longtown area, this house was demolished in 1836 and replaced by the York Methodist Chapel. The settlement initially received the name Abernathy , derived from the family name of the first settlers in the place. In 1834 the village received a United States Postal Service post office , which was closed only two years later. From 1866 there was a post office again in the village.
In April 1874, the settlement was incorporated as a Village and renamed Longtown. The new name of the village is also derived from the family name of a settler in the village. The Protestant residents of Longtown initially belonged to a parish in Friedenberg , due to the poor accessibility of the local church from Longtown and the steady growth of the Lutheran parish in Longtown, a Lutheran church was established in the school of Longtown in 1881. In the same year, the Lutheran parish of Longtown moved to a building outside the village, which existed until 1898. In 1897 another Lutheran congregation was founded and the Zion Lutheran Church was built, a wooden church that was replaced by a brick building in 1912.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Longtown had two churches, a school, a bank, a pub, three general stores, and a mill. Most of the town's residents lived from agriculture. On April 20, 1936, part of Longtown was destroyed by fire. The Longtown post office closed in 1966.
