The main roles are played by François Goeske , Jytte-Merle Böhrnsen , Josefine Preuss and Anatole Taubman . The film was produced by the Berlin production company Moviebrats in co-production with Dragonfly Films and NFP marketing & distribution . The story is about four young people who, during a geocaching tour in the Palatinate Forest, stumble upon an apparently disused American military base where top secret experiments with electromagnetic waves were carried out during the Cold War .

The film takes up conspiracy theories around the HAARP research program . It is also the first European feature film to deal with geocaching and the first German feature film to be shot in 3D with RED Epic cameras.

Lost Place was the first German and one of the first European films to be released in the new Dolby Atmos audio format .

action

The teenagers Daniel and Elli are enthusiastic geocachers who have arranged to meet for their first tour together and are accompanied by their friends Thomas and Jessica. Daniel finds Elli attractive, while Thomas hooks up with Jessica.

The treasure hunt takes the four youngsters deep into the idyllic Palatinate Forest . In a lake they find a geocache that contains hashish cookies. In the evening on an abandoned campsite, they are surprised by a man in a radiation protection suit. The man, who converted several caravans into Faraday cages , warns them of strong ELF waves that are supposed to emanate from a nearby HAARP base in the forest and the mind control it causes. The first health problems arise. Then Jessica disappears and panic breaks out among the youngsters. Electrical devices suddenly activate themselves. Thomas dies trying to escape in the car.

After Elli also disappears, Daniel sets off for the transmission tower. He finds Elli in the bunker under the system. Other health problems such as tooth and hair loss arise. The two meet Jessica, who commits suicide when she realizes the extent of her physical decline. Eventually you manage to turn off the main fuse and escape from the system.

The film ends after HAARP employees have removed all traces, sunk the geocache box in the lake and reactivated the system. The police called by Daniel and Elli are apparently influenced by HAARP and stop the investigation.

criticism

The film was recorded mixed.

"Lost Place [...] can be seen purely in terms of craftsmanship [...] and is well worth a look, but in terms of tension, this first German contribution to the self-selected subgenre is unfortunately stuck in good beginnings."

- Volker Robrahn : filmszene.de

"Neither the basically superfluous 3-D effect nor the sound fad of the new grenade all-round sound format called 'Dolby Atmos' can change the fact that the film lacks convincing actors, meaningful dialogues and dramaturgical density."

- Alexandra Seitz : film.fluter.de

"Debut director Thorsten Klein then makes sustained use of his impressive technical capabilities in order to create a tense atmosphere from the very first second - especially when showing in suitably equipped cinemas - which helps to overlook minor dramaturgical weaknesses in his thriller."

- Björn Becher : filmstarts.de

production

The film was shot on original locations in the Palatinate Forest, u. a. on relics and abandoned bunkers of the former American occupation, also in a forest area near Fulda and in the Berlin CCC studios .

marketing

The filmmakers conducted intensive social media work during the production and made the production transparent for those interested. The Facebook page of the film provides a comprehensive insight behind the scenes and using crowdsourcing has been user generated content integrated into the film. On a visitor day on the set, interested people from the geocaching community and lost -place fans had the opportunity to a. to visit the former American radio relay site Langerkopf near Hofstätten, which is otherwise inaccessible to the public .
