The Lotec Sirius is a super sports car that the German manufacturer Lotec introduced in 2000. The Sirius was to become the world's fastest street legal sports car and reach a top speed of 400 km / h. Small series production did not materialize, so the Sirius remained a one-off.

Development and production

The Sirius was designed by Lotec founder Kurt Lotterschmid. Planning began in 1992. Lotterschmid designed the body shape by “juxtaposing several chipboards with the rough silhouette and then processing them with the Flex ”. In this way, within two evenings, he carved a 1: 4 scale model. Lotterschmid did not hire a designer. He had "the exact shape of the car in mind". Lotterschmid did not make detailed drawings or even computer-controlled drafts.

Until its completion in 2000, he worked for eight years with two mechanics in his Kolbermoor workshop on the Sirius. When it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show , according to Lotterschmid, there were definitely respectful comments from greats from the automotive industry. Only Ferdinand Piëch , Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG , never looked at the prototype. Lotterschmid put the development costs at "six to seven million marks ".

As a competitor to the Sirius, Lotterschmid saw the McLaren F1 - with 368 km / h according to the vehicle registration the fastest street-legal sports car at the time. Originally, Lotterschmid wanted to install a six-cylinder engine from Porsche in the Sirius . Since the McLaren had a twelve-cylinder engine, the Sirius also needed a twelve-cylinder “for reasons of prestige”. The Sirius was supposed to be the first street-legal vehicle to reach the 400 km / h mark. The Michelin tires turned out to be a problem , their approval only applied up to 380 km / h.

Lotterschmid initially planned a small series production of the Sirius. A purchase price of 1.2 million Deutschmarks was targeted. He estimated the sales potential at “a minimum of 20, a maximum of 50 vehicles worldwide”. There were also considerations for a small series of 350 pieces. Lotterschmid, however, did not intend any production in his company in Kolbermoor, as he would have had to “hire at least 30 people and build a new production hall”. Therefore, he looked for donors who would have financed a production of the Sirius on a larger scale than would have been possible in Kolbermoor. Investors from Dubai were interested in small series production. There have also been a particularly large number of purchase inquiries from Dubai since the luxury magazine Jumeira Beach there dedicated a two-page glossy story to Sirius. Lotterschmid later announced that he had wanted to "put on the Sirius with Chinese business partners in a small series of 20 pieces". But since there were too many differences of opinion, the Sirius remained a one-off.

The editors of Auto Bild Test & Tuning said they were the first outsiders to drive the Lotec Sirius in 2004.

Technology and performance

The drive is based on a 6.0-liter V12 engine from Mercedes-Benz . It comes from the S-Class of the 140 series and develops 408 hp there. Lotterschmid equipped the engine with two KKK turbochargers . This increased the engine's output to 735 KW (1000 PS) at 0.85 bar boost pressure. If the boost pressure is increased to 1.20 bar, an engine output of 880 kW (1200 hp) is achieved. The maximum torque is 1100 or 1320 Nm, depending on the boost pressure. In addition, dry sump lubrication was installed to keep the engine always well lubricated. A six-speed gearbox transfers the power to the rear wheels.

The Sirius is made of materials that are also used in aircraft construction. The frame is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and tubes made of steel alloyed with chrome and molybdenum . The body is also made of CFRP. The doors open to the front and top ( scissor doors ). The body includes a central windshield wiper, three headlights with dipped beam headlights on the left and three on the right, colored glazing, a smooth underbody, two safety tanks in the side pods, a transparent engine cover and doors and hoods with gas pressure dampers. The curb weight of the vehicle is approx. 1280 kg.

The wheels are individually suspended at the front and rear on double wishbones, with shock absorbers , coil springs , stabilizers and a rack and pinion steering with servo . The braking system comes from Brembo and is equipped with an anti-lock braking system. The ground clearance of the vehicle can be increased from 80 to 160 mm with the help of an electro-hydraulic system. The Sirius is equipped with leather upholstery, sports seats with three-point belts, velor carpets and air conditioning. According to Lotterschmid, the air conditioning was "very important for Arab customers". The dashboard including the instruments comes from the Porsche 944 . The scale has been expanded to 400 km / h.

At maximum power, the Sirius accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. The comparatively high value is due to the Sirius' lack of traction. The car accelerates from 0 to 200 km / h in 7.8 seconds. Lotec specifies the maximum speed at 400 km / h. However, this is of a theoretical nature and has never been driven in 2004. Lotterschmid put the fuel consumption at 25 to 30 liters of Superplus per 100 kilometers. At a constant 120 km / h, 6.8 liters should be sufficient.
