Lothar Rechtacek (born January 29, 1943 in Teplitz-Schönau , Sudetenland ; † January 8, 2013 in Holbach near Nordhausen ) was a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

Life

In 1945 his mother fled with him and his older sister from his place of birth Teplitz to Niedersachswerfen in the southern Harz, where he spent his childhood. After completing his apprenticeship as a painter (1957–1960) and doing military service, he began studying decorative painting in 1962 at the Potsdam School of Applied Arts . In 1965 he moved to the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art in order to devote more time to studying sculpture. Here he worked for years with his mentors Werner Stötzer and Gerhard Rommel . During this time, many large sculptures were created in the Berlin area, for example the reconstruction of the Apollon team on the theater on Gendarmenmarkt . Since 1971 he has worked as a freelance artist. From 1972 to 1975 he headed the graphics center in Berlin-Pankow . In 1975 he founded the group Akanthus in Berlin, which still exists today, and was its artistic director until 1984. In 1984 he moved back to the southern Harz. There he was active as the head of the "Kunstkreis Nordhausen" until 1989. From 2002 he taught at the youth art school in Nordhausen. Until his death, Lothar Rechtacek lived and worked together with his wife Elke Rechtacek in Holbach.

The focus of his work lies in the design of humans and animals . Regardless of fashion trends, he always remained true to the realistic representation, liked to exaggerate the typical and kidnap the viewer into a mystical dream or fairy tale world. Most recently he dealt increasingly with Germanic mythological topics. His pictures do not primarily tell stories, but rather represent a self-contained snapshot. The ornament plays a major role in his work. His role models include Amedeo Modigliani in painting and August Gaul in sculpture. In addition to his main activity as a painter and sculptor, he was distinguished by his technical diversity: from graphics and various printing techniques to glass design to architecture- related art ( friezes , wall paintings , reliefs ) there is hardly a technique that he does not use. His profound technical training was an important basis for him.

While his work was initially characterized by striving for perfect craftsmanship in an almost old master- style manner , in later years he became increasingly free and technically more willing to experiment.
