Louise von Ehrenstein , married Louise Königstein (born March 17, 1867 in Vienna ; † February 13, 1944 there ) was an Austrian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Louise von Ehrenstein came in 1867 as the daughter of the kk general manager of the Austrian gendarmerie Friedrich von Ehrenstein and his wife Elisabeth, née. Schmid, born in Vienna. She was the youngest of three musically gifted daughters. Her sister Gisela von Ehrenstein (1859–1932) was a well-known concert pianist.

Louise's talent showed up early. At the age of nine she sang coloratura such as those of Rosine , Luise and Amina at societies . At the age of 13 she performed a rondo by Mozart at a public concert . She also appeared occasionally as a representation of the female lead in the opera The Fourteen Helpers by Richard von Perger . Despite her success with the audience, her parents had reservations about her daughter's stage career. A family friend then asked the opera singer Pauline Lucca to talk the girl out of her career aspiration, which she agreed to do. After Louise sang an aria by Mozart and a few songs to her, Lucca recognized her talent and instead encouraged her to plan for the future.

Louise von Ehrenstein then completed a three-year vocal course with Selma Nicklass-Kempner . She also took lessons in gait, dance and facial expressions from the dancer Bertha Linda (1850–1928, married Makart). She had test appearances as Leonore in Olomouc and as Margarethe in Brno . In May 1888, at the request of Bolko von Hochberg , she came to the Berlin Court Theater to replace the singer Marie Renard . Here she made her debut with the roles of Carmen , Mignon and Margarethe, which she had previously practiced with Lucca. Ehrenstein gave up the engagement after a year, because she was assigned roles that did not meet her wishes. So she rehearsed the Wagner roles Elisabeth , Elsa and Senta with Johanna Jachmann-Wagner , but instead had to sing Marie , Zerlina and Susanne .

Then in 1889 Ehrenstein went to the Vienna Court Opera . There she made her debut as Elisabeth on August 5th, followed by appearances as Margarethe and Elsa. After this guest performance, she became a permanent member of the Vienna Court Opera on September 1st and worked there as a successful singer with a large repertoire for over 10 years. She achieved one of her greatest successes in 1889 with the title role in the legend of St. Elisabeth by Franz Liszt . She also became famous for her interpretation of Wagner roles. Ehrenstein turned down various contract offers, e.g. B. from South America, New York and Madrid and stayed in Vienna. However, she gave numerous guest appearances, including at the Teatro Regio di Torino (1895), at La Scala in Milan (1896), the Munich Court Opera (1897), in Budapest , Prague and Trieste .

On November 11, 1891, Ehrenstein married the Viennese music critic and writer Joseph Königstein (1844–1902). On November 23, 1899, on the occasion of her departure from the Association of the Court Opera Theater, the Emperor appointed Louise von Ehrenstein as a chamber singer . She died in Vienna in 1944.
