Hans Heinrich XIV. Bolko Graf von Hochberg (born January 23, 1843 in Fürstenstein Castle , Waldenburg district , Province of Silesia , † December 1, 1926 in Bad Salzbrunn , Province of Lower Silesia ) was a German diplomat, director and composer.

Life

Bolko von Hochberg came from the noble family of the Counts von Hochberg . He was the youngest son of Hans Heinrich X. von Hochberg , Prince of Pless and his first wife Ida, née von Stechow-Kotzen. In Breslau he attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium , which he left in 1861 with the Abitur. After studying in Berlin (among others with Friedrich Kiel ) and Bonn, he worked in Saint Petersburg . But soon he went back to Silesia to pursue his musical studies. By 1906 he wrote an opera , two symphonies , a piano concerto , trios, quartets and numerous choral and solo songs .

In 1864 his Singspiel Claudine von Villa bella was performed, followed by the opera Die Falkensteiner in 1876 . In 1876, with considerable financial sacrifice, he founded the Silesian Music Festival , of which he directed 19 until 1925. They mostly took place in Görlitz . In 1886 he succeeded Botho von Hülsen's general manager of the royal theater in Berlin. In 1898, Hochberg succeeded in hiring Richard Strauss as court conductor at the Hofoper Unter den Linden . At the end of 1902 he took his leave because of a conflict with the imperial court. Then he lived again in Rohnstock (his country seat in Silesia) and devoted himself to his music . In 1910 he was made an honorary citizen of Görlitz and in 1913 as the Royal Prussian Professor. His works were scattered everywhere after the Second World War and have been brought together again in recent years by his great-grandson Peter Graf von Hochberg together with the pianist and conductor Michael Collins. His songs have now been set to music again and are available on CD.

From 1858 to 1926 he was the owner of Rohnstock Castle , where he also lived. Count Bolko rebuilt Rohnstock Castle in 1870 and created living conditions there.

Bolko von Hochberg belonged to the group of artistic directors and linguists who, in 1898, initiated and accompanied the creation of a standardized “ German stage pronunciation ” (lead author Theodor Siebs , 19th edition 1969, reprint 2000).

String quartet

Hochberg had his own string quartet in Dresden from 1872 to 1876 , of which Robert Hausmann (violoncello) was one of the members .
