Love (or L☂☽∀E , formerly I-Empire ) is an American science fiction film that was produced by the alternative rock band Angels & Airwaves and contains their music. It is also the directorial debut of William Eubank . The world premiere took place on February 2, 2011 at the 26th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival and later screened at the Seattle International Film Festival and Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal . On August 10, he ran in 450 selected cinemas in the United States, which is the Live Event Angels & Airwaves Presents Love Live ( L☽ve Live included), a concert by the band in live streaming , as well as a question-and-answer session.

Love is about the personal- psychological effects of isolation and loneliness (probably a tribute to Cast Away ) when a spaceman is stuck in space and thereby realizes the importance of interpersonal relationships and love . In addition, the fragility of mankind (through an apocalyptic doomsday - end times scenario) is a theme, inspired by Carl Sagan's warnings in Pale Blue Dot and highlights the importance of memories and stories as human heritage.

action

In 2039, American astronaut Lee Miller will be the only one brought to the International Space Station to check if it is safe after it was abandoned two decades ago. Shortly after arriving on board, radio contact is lost and Lee is left to his own devices without further explanation.

As time goes by, the lights go out on Earth and the station's life support systems fail, Lee struggles with his sanity and for survival. His world is a claustrophobic and lonely existence, and he begins to dream of former crew members - both Russian and American - portrayed in Polaroids left on board from previous missions. After a power problem, Lee has to go to a part of the station where he had previously let out the pressure, and he makes a strange and inexplicable discovery: the diary of a captain from the American Civil War in 1864. Whether a de facto suicide attempt succeeds and only the rest of the plot of the film takes place in the consciousness of the protagonist, who is racing towards earth in his spacesuit - as a leaked film sequence and the last scenes of the film suggest - or Lee actually goes back into the forced exile of the International Space Station, remains open.

After several years, a huge alien space station docks and Lee learns that he is the last human to survive.

production

“I can tell you, honestly, the movie is ten times better than I thought it would be. But it's not meant to compete with Transformers. This is an art-house film and no band has really done this in a very long time. So we're hoping that we catch some people off guard and we're also hoping that we do something that is very credible as far its artistic acumen goes. "

“I can tell you, honestly, the film is ten times better than I expected. But he shouldn't compete with Transformers . It's an art house film , and no band has really done that in a long time. So we hope that we will surprise a few people, and we also hope that we can achieve something that is very believable in terms of his artistic acumen. "

- Tom DeLonge : ThePunkSite.com

First teaser was published in 2007 and 2009. On January 10, 2011, the final trailer was published on Apple Trailers. The publication received a lot of attention on various film websites. Based on the trailer, many compared the film to 2001: A Space Odyssey , Moon and Solaris .

It is noteworthy that the set was built by William Eubank himself and was in his parents' garden. In a making-of video, Eubank gave details of the construction and gave a list of materials used, including blankets, MDF panels , heat bags, Velcro fasteners , thermal insulation and fairy lights . According to Tom DeLonge, the space station from the film Apollo 13 should be rented first, but for cost reasons, a new one was built. He also dug the trenches himself over three weeks.

There is no hint of weightlessness. Only the camera work at times suggests a corresponding feeling.

The film budget was about 500,000 to 600,000 US dollars .

Reviews

The film was originally scheduled for three screenings at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. However, two more were set up at the Arlington Theater after the first sold out.

Variety's Dennis Harvey wrote: “ Love delights with the details of its main scene design and adept special effects , regularly interesting yet subordinate soundtrack (the only real song runs during the credits ), and a lively editorial pace… Love remains as incomprehensible as its intentionally ambiguous narrative . But the presentation is so cleverly imaginative that most spectators enjoy the ride, despite the mysterious destination. "

Dustin Hucks of Ain't It Cool News wrote: “ Love can be very comprehensive at times with scenes, dialogues and its flow ... if you value clarity and a fixed chronology , Love will leave you frustrated. For others, however, the challenge of understanding is a reason to see the film several times, like for me ... This is a film that is definitely not for everyone - but it offers a lot for fans of Inception and Moon . "

Hucks also wrote that Love was one of the most visually exciting low-budget films he has ever seen and concluded his review by saying that " Love is worth looking for a movie theater - but don't miss it on DVD if you do you won't find any. "
