Lucian Mureșan

Lucian Cardinal Mureşan (born May 23, 1931 in Firiza , today part of Baia Mare , Maramureş district ) is a Romanian major archbishop and thus the head of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church united with Rome .

Life

Lucian Mureșan was born on May 23, 1931, the tenth of twelve children of his parents Petru and Maria and was ordained a priest on December 19, 1964 for the Diocese of Maramureș . Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Maramureș in 1990 . The episcopal ordination on May 27, 1990 donated him the then archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia and later cardinal, Alexandru Todea ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Lugoj , Ioan Ploscaru , and the emeritus Nuncio in Germany and later cardinal, Guido Del Mestri . In 1994 he was appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Alba Iulia and Făgăraş. On August 27, 1994, it was installed in Blaj Cathedral . As a metropolitan, he received the pallium from Pope John Paul II .

On December 16, 2005, he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed first major archbishop of the Romanian Catholic Church.

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Atanasio (Sant'Atanasio dei Greci) in the cardinals college.

He is President of the Romanian Bishops' Conference and President of the Council of the Romanian Church in Romania.
