Luciano Ribeiro Corrêa (born November 25, 1982 in Brasília ) is a former Brazilian judoka . He was world champion in 2007 and third in the 2005 world championship.

Athletic career

The 1.89 m tall Luciano Corrêa fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 2001 he won the Pan American U20 Championships. In 2002 he was the South American Champion and third in the Pan American Championships. In 2003 he started at the Universiade in Jeju both in the light heavyweight division and in the open class and won two bronze medals. In 2005 he won the Pan American Championships. At the 2005 World Championships in Cairo he defeated the Italian Gianluca Giaccaglia in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to the Japanese Keiji Suzuki . He won the battle for bronze against Fallah Abbas from Iran . In 2006 Corrêa won the Brazilian championships. In July 2007 he lost to the Cuban Oreidis Despaigne in the semi-finals of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro , in the battle for bronze he defeated the Venezuelan Albenis Rosales . At the 2007 World Championships , which were also held in Rio de Janeiro two months after the Pan American Games, he defeated the Hungarian Dániel Hadfi in the semifinals and the British Peter Cousins in the final . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he was defeated in the first round by the Dutchman Henk Grol . In 2009 Luciano Corrêa finished third in the light heavyweight division of the Pan American Championships, but won the title in the open class. At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Mongols Temuulen Battulga . In 2010 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Moscow . In July 2011, he won the World Military Games in both individual and team competitions. Three months later at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara , he defeated Oreidis Despaigne in the final. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he won against Oumar Kone from Mali and was then eliminated by Henk Grol, to whom he lost for the second time at the Olympic Games.

In 2013 Luciano Corrêa won the South American Championships, was third in the Pan American Championships and second in the Military World Championships. The following year he won silver at the Pan American Championships. In April 2015 he was defeated by the Cuban José Armenteros in the final of the Pan American championships . Three months later, he won the final at the Pan American Games in Toronto against the Canadian Marc Deschenes . In 2016 he won bronze again at the Pan American Championships. Luciano Corrêa was not nominated for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, while Rafael Buzacarini competed for Brazil in the light heavyweight division .
