Life

He came from a Florentine noble family and was the son of the Marchese Giovanni Francesco Torregiani and the Baroness Teresa del Nero, the last descendant of a Florentine noble family and a relative of Pope Leo XI. In his youth he was arrogant and did not submit to the upbringing of his parents, so that at the age of twelve they sent him to Rome to the Collegio Romano and placed him in the care of the Jesuits . There he moderated himself, devoted himself seriously to education and decided on the clergy. In 1716 he began studying at the academy for the clergy .

On September 4, 1721, Luigi Maria Torrigiani began his career as a trainee lawyer at the courts of justice of the Apostolic Signature . From September 23, 1721 to October 1722 he was governor of Rieti , from August 17, 1722 to March 1728, governor of Città di Castello ; he was also a member of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature. From March 1728 Torregiani was relator of the Sacra Consulta . Pope Clement XII. appointed him papal house prelate , and Torregiani became prelate of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity . As General Commissioner in Perugia from February to November 1734, he took care of the affairs of the Spanish troops that passed through Italy. In 1735 he found himself secretary of the Congregation for Trade with Ancona, and in October 1736 he was responsible for accounting for the expenses incurred for the legations in Ravenna and Ferrara. From 1737 to 1743 Luigi Maria Torrigiani was secretary of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity and the Consulta before he was appointed Apostolic Protonotary in June 1746 .

In the consistory of November 26, 1753, Pope Benedict XIV appointed Luigi Maria Torrigiani cardinal deacon . He received the red hat on November 29th and the title diakonia Santi Cosma e Damiano on December 10th of the same year. Cardinal Torrigiani opted on April 22, 1754 for the titular diaconia Santi Vito e Modesto . He belonged to the Congregations for Ecclesiastical Immunity, for Good Government, the Consistorial Congregation, the Dombauhütte of St. Peter and the Congregation for the Water Supply, besides he had numerous benefits as Commendatary Abbot . Among other things, he served as secretary of the Congregation of Consulta . On June 1, 1754 he received the minor orders and the next day the consecration to subdiaconate . From June to September 1756 he was Pro- Camerlengo of the Roman Church. Luigi Maria Torrigiani participated as a cardinal in the conclave of 1758 , which Pope Clement XIII. he chose. From October 8, 1758 to February 2, 1769 he was Cardinal Secretary of State as the successor to the late Cardinal Alberico Archinto . The Pope appointed him against the majority opinion of the College of Cardinals , which assumed that Cardinal Torrigiani was not qualified to deal with the royal courts, since he would never have stayed outside Rome and they attributed a harsh, unyielding character to him; in fact, the Pope experienced a series of controversies which his Secretary of State sparked with various Christian princes. On April 22, 1765 he opted for the titular diakonia Sant'Agata in Suburra . Luigi Maria Torrigiani took part in the 1769 conclave , from which Clement XIV emerged as Pope. As Cardinal Secretary of State he was replaced by Cardinal Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini . Also at the conclave 1774-1775 Luigi Maria Torrigiani was among the electoral cardinals when Pius VI. was elected Pope. From February 22, 1775 until his death he was secretary of the Congregation of the Roman and General Inquisition .

Luigi Maria Torrigiani died unexpectedly on the morning of January 6, 1777 after a stroke . He was buried in the chapel of St. Filippo Neri in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini , which he had repaired. Cardinal Carlo Livizzani became his executor .
