Lunar Strain is the first album by the Swedish melodic death metal band In Flames . The album was released in 1994 via Wrong Again Records.
background
Since it was "hellishly difficult for the band to get a good singer", they first resorted to Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquility . The songs Behind Space and Clad in Shadows were re-recorded for the album Colony .
All titles, with the exception of the Swedish folk song Hårgalåten , were written by Jesper Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström. The lyrics are all by Mikael Stanne and deal "with mysterious things in space, with the questions that are still open about the infinite universe".
The album was produced by the band itself. Hammerfall guitarists Oscar Dronjak and Jennica Johansson (vocals) and Yvla Wåhlsted ( violin ) appeared as guest musicians . The artwork was designed by Kenneth Johansson.
The fact that the band was still relatively unknown at the time of publication had an impact on sales at the beginning; It did not find significant sales until a year after its publication. The Japanese pressing published on April 1, 1995 with the tracks from the EP Subterranean and a contribution recorded for a Metallica tribute album sold 3,000 copies within two days. By mid-1995, sales including the Japanese version totaled around 10,000 units.

Versions
On April 1, 1995, in addition to the European version, a Japanese version was released with the tracks from the EP Subterranean and a contribution recorded for a Metallica tribute album. In 1999 the album was re-released along with the EP via Regain Records . A picture LP is from the same year. In 2010, the album was re-released as a single CD by the same record company and topped up with the four songs from the 1993 demo . The order of the titles was changed a little for the re-release. It came in a box with a patch, a button and a poster. This publication is limited to 3000 copies.
