A Sense of Purpose ( English "A sense of determination") is the ninth studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band In Flames . The album was released on April 4, 2008 via Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

At the beginning of May 2007, the band began preparing for the new album and pre-production began at the end of the month. In the summer of the year, the band played individual concerts as well as at various festivals before the actual recordings began in September 2007 in the band's own IF studio in Gothenburg . During the recording process, the band recorded twelve short videos that were distributed over the Internet as a studio diary. The recordings were finished at the end of November.

The album title was released on January 9th, the accompanying artwork and track listing on January 14th, 2008.

While recording, the band extended their contract with Nuclear Blast for all territories outside of North America. In Flames signed a deal with Koch Records for North America. The artwork for the album and the first single were designed by Alex Pardee .

background

Meaning of the album title

According to guitarist Björn Gelotte, the album title is about the fact that many people don't think about the reasons and intentions for their actions. The term "A Sense of Purpose" is paramount to all lyrics, but it is not a concept album .

Meanings of the songs

In an interview with the German magazine Rock Hard , singer Anders Fridén gave information about the meanings of the songs:

  • The Mirror's Truth is primarily concerned with pollution and global warming . Humanity shies away from confrontations, e.g. B. Find solutions to these problems.
  • In Sleepless Again it comes to the question of where it may lead, when a man comes with his dark side in contact.
  • Alias deals with the question of what it would be like if there was a place in people where one could push away one's negative experiences and thoughts.
  • I'm the Highway is about taking your destiny into your own hands.
  • In Move Through Me it comes to people who are plagued by many setbacks, to help and cheer.
  • Sober and Irrelevant is about people's fear of becoming part of the gray crowd. Many people would only do things to get noticed and to be noticed.
  • Condemned deals with the challenges of life and that one should master them.
  • In Drenched in Fear it comes to people who are at the expense of other profile.
  • March to the Shore deals with the subject of revenge.

reception

The German magazine Rock Hard named A Sense of Purpose “Album of the Month” with a grade point average of 8.0 out of a maximum of 10 points. Boris Kaiser wrote in his review that “the album combines hardness, melody and the willingness to experiment, old school and modern sounds in the most successful way”. In the Metal Hammer category , the album took third place after three consecutive soundcheck victories for the previous albums. Editor-in-chief Thorsten Zahn wrote that the band had perfected the steel mixture found with the album Reroute to Remain with A Sense of Purpose . In contrast, Amadeus Mader of the online magazine Metalnews.de described A Sense of Purpose as "the most average work of her career" and criticized the "constant change between hard verse and hymnic refrain".

The album debuted at number 1 on the Swedish charts. There were further top 10 placements in Finland (3rd place) and Canada (7th place). In Japan the album reached number 14. In the USA , A Sense of Purpose sold around 20,000 times in the first week of sales and reached number 28 in the charts. In the German-speaking world, the album debuted at number 6 in Germany and Austria and at number 29 in Switzerland .

The single The Mirror's Truth

On March 7th, 2008 the first single The Mirror's Truth was released, which apart from the song The Mirror's Truth , contains three non-album tracks. The piece Abnegation was already featured on the sampler Viva la Bands, Vol. 2 , released on September 4, 2007, and was remixed for the EP and given new vocals. For the title song The Mirror's Truth , a music video was shot in an abandoned factory building in Skellefteå , which was produced by Popcore Films. The band has already published a making-of of the video on their Myspace page.

The single reached number 14 on the Swedish singles charts. In Germany, the single was 72nd, in Austria 51st and in Finland fifth.
