Whoracle is the third music album by the Swedish melodic death metal band In Flames . It was released by Nuclear Blast in 1997 . The title is a play on words; a suitcase word from "Whore" ( English for whore ) and "Oracle" (English for oracle ).

History of origin

All songs on the album, except for the Depeche Mode - cover "Everything Counts", composed by the band. The lyrics were written by dark tranquility guitarist Niklas Sundin and are based on a concept designed by Anders Fridén .

The album was recorded in Studio Fredmann under the direction of Frederik Nordström. He was supported by the band. The album was mixed by Frederik Nordström and Anders Fridén. Whoracle was mastered by Göran Finnberg and Frederik Nordström. The cover artwork was designed by Andreas Marschall . Ulrika Natterdahl can be heard as a guest musician on the title track “Whoracle”.

The concept

Whoracle is a concept album about the past, present and the hypothetical future of planet earth . In “Jotun”, an apocalyptic event that destroys a society casts its shadow. "Episode 666" describes this event, which ironically is televised. The previous songs describe the rise and fall of a global society. "The Hive" and "Jester Script Transfigured" describe this technologically advanced society and a utopian new world order. This world order will be destroyed again by human nature in the next two songs. The Depeche Mode cover version "Everything Counts" is integrated into the concept and implies how the people who built the society in question and then destroyed it only understand their deeds when it is already too late.
