Lupus Servatus (also called Servatus Lupus and Lupus von Ferrières ; * around 805, † after 861) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery Ferrières-en-Gâtinais , theologian and confidante of Emperor Charles the Bald . His letters are of high literary quality and are important sources for the history of the Carolingian era .

Life

His father Antelmus came from Bavaria , his mother Frotilde was a Franconian from Gâtinais . The bishops Heribald and Abbo of Auxerre were his brothers. As a teenager he entered the Ferrières-en-Gâtinais monastery in the diocese of Sens . Around 828 he came to the Fulda monastery , where Rabanus Maurus was his teacher. He was friends with Einhard and probably also with Gottschalk von Orbais .

Around 836 he returned to Ferrières, where he was supported by the Empress Judith and her son Charles the Bald. In 840 he was elected Abbot of Ferrières. In the disputes over rule in the Carolingian Empire after the death of Louis the Pious , he always remained loyal to Karl the Bald and was employed by him in numerous diplomatic missions.

Works

He wrote several smaller theological works, including Viten von St. Maximin von Trier and St. Wigbert . For the Margrave Eberhard von Friuli he put on an extensive collection of legal texts and capitularies . Of his numerous letters, 132 have survived; they were probably edited by his pupil Heiricus von Auxerre . The letters testify to his high classical education and are influenced by the letters of Cicero . He was particularly interested in philology , he collected manuscripts from ancient authors (Cicero, Boethius , Valerius Maximus, etc.), which he commented on and had copied in his scriptorium . Letters 10, 4 and 91, 4 attest to his efforts to get a copy of the then very rare De vita Caesarum des Suetonius . He was one of the first readers of Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni and expressed himself with the greatest admiration for its style (Letter 1, 5 ), which, in contrast to other contemporary production, he praised as a successful realization of ancient stylistic ideals and to which he even attested Ciceronian gravitas (dignity).

Individual evidence

  1. In a letter to Heribald he mentions the communis frater , the "common brother" (No. 37, in Epistolae (in quart) 6: Epistolae Karolini aevi (IV). Edited by Ernst Dümmler , Ernst Perels et al.
