The Mærsk D-class refers to a ferry class consisting of three units .

history

The ships were between 2004 and 2006 on the South Korean shipyard Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries in Geoje for the AP Moller-Maersk Group owned Norfolkline built. All three ships are used between Dover and Dunkerque .

In July 2010 the Norfolkline was sold to DFDS Seaways . The three D-Class ships were subsequently renamed.

description

It is powered by four four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer MAN B & W (type 8L48 / 60B), each with 9,600  kW power . The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . The ships reach a speed of 25  knots . The engines are housed in two separate engine rooms.

Three MAN diesel generators (type: 6L32 / 40), each with 2,280 kW output, and two shaft generators driven by the main engines , each with 3,800 kW output, are available for power generation.

The ships are equipped with three bow thrusters and one stern thruster, each with 1,800 kW output, and have fin stabilizers .

The ships have two decks for passengers and three ro-ro decks. The ro-ro decks, which are connected to one another by ramps, are decks 3, 4 and 5. Decks 3 and 4 are 4.9 m high and have the necessary height for the transport of trucks, on deck 5 is with 2.4 m high only sufficient height for the transport of cars. The ships have a side opening bow hatch and a side opening gate at the stern. There is also a fixed ramp on the forecastle. A bulkhead closes the ro-ro deck behind. Deck 4 merges into an open deck at the rear of the ship. The ships can be loaded and unloaded via the gates and the ramp on the forecastle or the open deck 4 at the stern using ramps on the shore.

The facilities for passengers such as restaurants, bars, shops and lounges are located on decks 6 and 7, with truck drivers having their own restaurant and lounge. The ferries have no passenger cabins as they were built for use on the relatively short route between Dover and Dunkerque. The passenger capacity was initially 780 passengers. In 2008 it was increased to 1000 passengers. The RoRo decks had 1,800  lane meters and offered space for 200 cars and 120 trucks. DFDS describes the passenger capacity as 1,212 people and specifies 2,900 lane meters for the RoRo decks, which can accommodate 304 cars and 66 lorries.

The ships were designed by Mærsk Ship Design and much of the interior was designed by Steen Friis Design.
