Mac OS X 10.2 " Jaguar " is the third major version of macOS , the desktop operating system from Apple , which was introduced under the name Mac OS X at the time. Apple released Jaguar on August 23, 2002, the last version is 10.2.8 from October 3, 2003. Mac OS X 10.1 "Puma" followed and was replaced by Mac OS X Panther .

Since this version, the big cat-inspired code and project names have been part of the official product names.

Innovations

Apple introduced the following new features for Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar":

  • Address Book, a program for managing contact information
  • Bonjour, also known as Zeroconf , a protocol for automatic network configuration
  • CUPS ( Common Unix Printing System ), a free printing system for Unix
  • the Finder now has an integrated search field in each window
  • iChat now supports AOL instant messenger
  • Inkwell, a program for handwriting recognition
  • Mail with an optional spam filter
  • Quartz Extreme, an improved version of Quartz with increased use of the graphics processor and reduced load on the CPU
  • Speed ​​increase

System requirements

  • Power Mac G3, G4, Power Mac G5 (from 10.2.7), iMac , eMac , PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook with more than 233 MHz
  • 128 MB RAM (256 MB to 512 MB recommended)
  • 3 GB of free space on the hard drive
  • CD drive for installation

Old programs that run under Mac OS 9 are still supported through the Classic environment . However, the real Mac OS 9 required for virtualization must be purchased separately.
