In the course of this, the Madaoua district was converted into the Madaoua arrondissement.

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center of Madaoua and the canton of Madaoua.
