Maden ( Ottoman Erganimadeni ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Elazığ . The city is 77 kilometers south-east of Elazığ by road and is home to around a third of the district's population (2018: 32.35%). The city got its name from the rich metal deposits in the area (maggots = metal, mineral deposits). The Maden copper mine and the associated administrative center Ergani were mentioned as early as the 18th century, the latter as a sandschak center as early as 1518.
The district of Maden is located in the south of the province and borders in the north with the central district ( Merkez ), in the west with the district Sivrice , in the east with the district Alacakaya and in the south with the province Diyarbakır . In addition to the district town there are 38 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 296 inhabitants. Gezin is the largest village with 1,373 inhabitants.
