The Mainz is a tour ship that is used by the Bingen Waterways and Shipping Authority .

history

Hungarian state yacht

The ship was built in 1943 with hull number 1307 by the shipyard Christof Ruthof in Regensburg . It was a personal gift from Adolf Hitler to the Hungarian Governor Miklós Horthy and was put into service as a state yacht called Hungária . The Hungária had a crew of 16 and luxuriously furnished living rooms and bedrooms for 15 guests. Their drive consisted of two MWM diesel engines, each with 250 HP (184 kW).

At the beginning of 1945 the ship was confiscated by the Wehrmacht and used as an armed auxiliary warship under the German flag on the Danube . The crew managed to escape when the war ended with the ship to Regensburg. There it was taken possession of by the American occupying forces as spoils of war and then placed in Deggendorf .

Tour ship

In 1950 it was acquired by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration for DM 170,000. For the conversion work that was carried out in Koblenz , the ship had to be transported to the Rhine. Since it was not possible to transport it by water, the Hungária was dismantled and the hull was dragged to Ingolstadt . There it was loaded onto a road scooter and transported by land to Karlsruhe and then by water to Koblenz. The dismantled parts, such as the drive motors and the interior fittings, were brought to Koblenz by truck and train.

The ship was restored at the Koblenz waterway machinery office and put into service on June 14, 1954 under the name Mainz for the Southwest Waterways and Shipping Directorate . In 1966 a more powerful machine system was installed. In 1991 the Mainz was overhauled at the Schichau Seebeck shipyard in Bremerhaven ; The front conference room was renewed and the asbestos-containing insulating materials were removed. At the Boost shipyard in Trier , a new wheelhouse with a one-man control stand and an electro-hydraulic control were installed in April 1998. In 2003, the Ebert shipyard in Neckarsteinach installed new engines and installed a bow thruster .

use

The Mainz is mainly used for meetings of the Federal Government, such as state visits, international conferences and related waterways meeting. The sailing area is the entire Rhine, the Moselle , the Saar and the lower Main and Neckar . The ship is stationed in Koblenz . On July 1, 2017, the coffin of the deceased was carried on the Mainz from Ludwigshafen to Speyer as part of the funeral for former Chancellor Helmut Kohl .
