Map of the Soul: Persona is the sixth EP by the South Korean boy group BTS , which was released on April 12, 2019 via Big Hit Entertainment . The album contains seven songs, including the single Boy with Luv with the American singer Halsey . Four different physical versions (1, 2, 3, 4) have been released. Persona is the first part of the Map-of-the-Soul series.

Persona is the best-selling music album of all time in South Korea with + 3.7 million records sold.

Background and content

Map of the Soul: Persona was inspired in part by Carl Gustav Jung's theories and Greek mythology .

Leader RM released the comeback trailer Persona on March 27th . He raps in a classroom and in the background you can see a blackboard scrawled over with keywords from Jung's theory. The song deals with the question "Who am I?"

On March 31st and April 2nd, BigHit released the four concept images. Version 4 shows BTS with grapes that can be traced back to the Greek god Dionysus .

On April 8th, BigHit released the track listing and described the seven tracks in a press release.

The single Boy with Luv belongs to the music genre pop-funk and deals with the topic of love and joy. The song goes back to Bangtan's old track Boy in Luv by Skool Luv Affair .

Mikrokosmos and HOME are both songs that the guys dedicate to their fans ARMY. BTS themselves describe Mikrokosmos as a song with which they “paint the world through human interest.” In HOME they sing about the fact that their fans are their home, where they feel safe when they are tired and lonely.

Make It Right was written by Ed Sheeran . Jamais Vu , which describes the phenomenon of the same name, Jamais Vu , is a unit song by J-Hope , Jungkook and Jin. The last song Dionysus , which bears the name of the Greek god for fertility and wine, is a hip-hop track with strong rock influences.

BTS made her first appearance with the single Boy with Luv on Saturday Night Live in New York.

Music video

The Boy with Luv teasers were published on April 7th and 10th . The music video, which was released on April 12th at the same time as the album, is heavily inspired by the US film musical Singin 'in the Rain .

The video reached more than 74.6 million clicks after 24 hours, breaking the YouTube record for the most views in one day. Another record was broken when it hit 100 million views in just 37 hours.

Allmusic's Neil Z. Young praised the album and wrote "Although it's only the first piece of the puzzle, Map of the Soul: Persona is the right piece for a group at its best." For NME , Rhian Daly wrote: "Map Of The Soul : Persona jumps impressively and coherently from genre to genre, but sounds more convincing than ever before. "

Persona by Douglas Greenwood of The Independent received mixed reviews . He wrote “when they stand on their own two feet without the big co-stars, BTS are still completely convincing with their own sound. In terms of production technology, the music falls by the wayside when it comes to breaking new ground. "

Map of the Soul: Persona was pre-ordered over three million times prior to release. In their home country, the group reached the top of the album charts for the eleventh time; in Germany the EP reached number three, with which BTS entered the top 10 of the German album charts for the first time. In the US, it's their third number-one album in less than a year, something the Beatles most recently achieved. In the UK, it is the first album by a Korean artist to top the album charts. According to the United World Charts , the album sold 2,514,000 copies worldwide in its first week.

In South Korea, the album broke a 24-year-old record with over 3.2 million records sold and became the best-selling music album of all time.
