action
Bombay is controlled by gang boss Jahangir Khan, known as Abbaji. Not only the corrupt police officers Purohit and Pandit work for him, the politicians also depend on him. Miyan Maqbool is his right-hand man and a reliable gangster. Abbaji's young wife Nimmi has already caught her eye and starts an affair with him. She no longer wants to hide her love and gives him a choice - either he kills Abbaji or she.
When Abbaji's future son-in-law Guddu comes into question as his successor, Maqbool sees the danger and kills Abbaji in his sleep. Now Maqbool becomes the head of the clan. However, he is not shown the necessary loyalty, as everyone suspected the murder. The politicians, police officers and rival gangsters - all of this rips apart under Maqbool's rule, driving him to despair. Nimmi is also haunted by delusions. One murder follows the next - until the prophecy of the policeman Pandit is fulfilled and Maqbool faces death.

criticism
"With all of this," Maqbool "is also a classic mafia film that bows down in particular to Francis Ford Coppola's" The Godfather ". But although one might assume differently with such disparate ingredients - mafia film, Bollywood musical, Shakespeare - the result is a self-contained one , highly entertaining film, which as an example of a successful cultural transfer is always astonishing. " (from arte )
"" Maqbool "overwhelms with its acting performances, fascinates with its multi-layered story and the safe staging. It is neither the best film adaptation of Shakespeare nor a revolution for Bollywood - but a consistent and daring mixture of "Parallel Cinema", Bollywood, Shakespeare and Bollywood. A mix that could have failed, but in Bhardwaj's hands advanced to one of the best Indian films of 2003. "(from molodezhnaja.ch)
Others
Vishal Bhardwaj was again inspired by Shakespeare in another film and shot the film Omkara , which is based on Othello . Here, too, he put the action in a gangster milieu.
