Marc Walder

Marc Walder (born August 19, 1965 in Thal SG ) is a Swiss journalist , media manager and former professional tennis player . He is CEO and Managing Partner of Ringier AG and Chairman of the Group Executive Board.

Athletic career

Walder played as a professional between 1984 and 1991 tournaments on the ATP Tour . His best ranking in Switzerland was seventh, in the world rankings 170th in doubles and 575th in singles. In 1989 he was two-time Swiss champion in doubles (indoor and outdoor).

Career as a media manager

After eight years as a professional tennis player, Walder started a career at Ringier AG, a Swiss media company, in 1991. From 1993 to 1994 he completed an apprenticeship at the Ringier School of Journalism . From 1997 to 1999, Walder was deputy editor-in-chief of the Sunday newspaper SonntagsBlick and from 1999 to 2000 he headed the sports department of the daily newspaper Blick and SonntagsBlick. From 2000 to 2006, Walder was editor-in-chief of Schweizer Illustrierte . He then became editor-in-chief of SonntagsBlick and at the same time headed the newspaper division of Ringier AG. On September 1, 2008, Marc Walder took over the role of CEO at Ringier Switzerland in the group management. As a media manager, Walder relies on a strategy of diversification: Under his leadership, Ringier has supplemented its core business (newspapers, magazines, printing plants) with investments in entertainment (events, ticketing, radio, television) and transaction-based internet businesses (online marketplaces, e-commerce) On April 5, 2012, Walder was appointed CEO of Ringier AG and Chairman of the Executive Committee. Until March 2013 he was also CEO of Ringier Publishing. In 2016 he was jointly responsible for the founding of Admeira , a joint marketing organization of Ringier and Swisscom , and for the founding of the joint venture Ringier Axel Springer Schweiz AG . On January 30, 2018, it was announced at the Ringier Management Conference that Marc Walder had acquired 10 percent of the shares in the company and thus became managing partner.

digitalswitzerland

In 2013, Walder initiated the “Digital Zurich 2025” project. Together with representatives from the city, the canton and business leaders, Zurich is to become the digital capital of Europe. In 2016, the initiative was expanded to include the whole of Switzerland, as they wanted to make even more use of the location advantage. At the same time, “Digital Zurich 2025” was renamed “digitalswitzerland”. In 2017, Walder initiated the first Swiss Digital Day, which took place on November 21. On October 25, 2018, the second digital day took place under the motto "digital experience together". The third digital day took place on September 3, 2019 under the motto "Dialogue and dealing with digitization". This time the nationwide day of action was all about "lifelong learning". With this initiative, Walder would like to encourage the Swiss population to pursue lifelong learning. One day before the third digital day, on September 2, 2019, the 1st Swiss Global Digital Summit took place. In this event, Walder and Federal President Ueli Maurer invited high-ranking representatives from business and science to Geneva . The aim of this meeting was to launch the Swiss Digital Initiative (SDI), which in the coming years should help ensure that the digital world is also fair. Walder is president of the steering committee and member of the executive committee of digitalswitzerland. At the Digital Economy Award Night 2019, Walder was awarded the "Digital Economy Ambassador" prize. He was honored for his commitment to Switzerland as a business location and the ICT industry.

Mandates

Walder is a board member of several subsidiaries of the diversified media company Ringier. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Admeira AG, which is divided between the two main shareholders Ringier and Swisscom , Ringier Sports AG, the joint venture between Ringier and Infront, the sports marketing company based in Zug, Switzerland, Ringier Africa AG, the daily newspaper Le Temps SA and the online platform Scout24 Schweiz AG . Walder is Deputy Chairman of Ticketcorner AG and Ringier Axel Springer Schweiz AG , the joint venture between Ringier and the German media company Axel Springer SE , and a member of the Board of Management of Ringier Axel Springer Media AG . He is a member of the Board of Directors of JobCloud AG, Marquard Media AG, Sportradar Holding AG and a member of the Laureus Foundation Switzerland. In May 2012, Walder joined the board of directors of the Swiss Management Society. In June 2017, Walder took part in the constituent meeting of the Advisory Board for Digital Transformation of the Federal Council, of which he is still a member today.

Private

Marc Walder lives near Zurich, is married and has two daughters.
