Marcello Danon (born October 3, 1920 in Sofia , Bulgaria , † January 21, 1997 in Rome , Italy ) was an Italian film producer and screenwriter , who through films such as The black slave , The avenger from the coffin , A cage full of fools and Noch a cage full of fools became internationally known.

life and career

Marcello Danon, trained in Paris, left his first mark as a film producer in 1958 when he realized the production for John Berry's historical drama The Black Slave together with Roland Girard, Sig Shore and René Gaston Vuattoux. Ten years later, in the late 1960s, he then worked as a producer for the literary film The Avenger from the Coffin by director André Hunebelle . At the beginning of the 1970s he was in charge of other film productions such as the thriller The Black Body of the Tarantula , where he also worked on the screenplay, and for the film drama Russian Summer by Antonio Calenda with Oliver Reed and Claudia Cardinale in the lead roles.

He achieved great success as a film producer and screenwriter for the cinema in 1978, when he wrote the screenplay for the comedy A Cage Full of Fools with Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault together with Francis Veber , Édouard Molinaro and Jean Poiret . For the film, Marcello Danon's team of authors received an Oscar nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category . Due to the great popularity of A Cage Full of Fools , the first sequel, Another Cage Full of Fools , appeared on the screen in 1980 , as well as another sequel in 1985 under the title A Cage Full of Fools - Now we are getting married . In 1996, director Mike Nichols made an American remake called The Birdcage with Robin Williams , Nathan Lane and Gene Hackman . Marcello Danon acted as executive producer.

Danon was married to the Bulgarian actress Zora, who often worked in the Italian theater. The daughter who emerged from this marriage, Ambra Danon , became a well-known costume designer in Italian film and theater and also received an Oscar nomination for her work on A Cage Full of Fools as a costume designer .
