Marco Ciatti

Marco Ciatti (born July 1, 1955 in Prato ) is an Italian art historian and current director of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence .

biography

Marco Ciatti graduated in art history and has been working as an art historian in the Ministry of Cultural Property and Tourism since 1980 . From 1981 to 1984 he worked at the Soprintendenza of the Beni Artistici e Storici of Siena and from 1984 at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, where he was for a long time head of the laboratory for the restoration of paintings on canvas and wood as well as the area for the restoration of textile works of art. He was also deputy director of the Scuola di Alta Formazione e Studi , attached to the institute, teaching history and theory of restoration.

Since 1997 he has been director of the restoration department of the Institute OPD Restauro . He supported the Problemi di Conservazione e Restauro (Problems of Conservation and Restoration) series published by OPD. Since 2004 he has been the scientific coordinator of the Storia e teoria del restauro series (history and theory of restoration).

After working as an interim soprintendente in the past (between October 2006 and March 2008), he was appointed official delegate from December 2010 to February 2012 by the interim general director Cristina Acidini .

During his work at Opificio, he led the restoration work on important masterpieces by Fra Angelico , Fra Bartolommeo , Botticelli , Caravaggio , Coppo di Marcovaldo , Cimabue , Gentile da Fabriano , Giovanni Pisano , Giotto , Filippo Lippi , Mantegna , Raffael , Rosso Fiorentino , Rubens , to then deal with related projects such as publishing catalogs and organizing exhibitions on the restored works.

From 1998 to 2011 he lectured on the theory of restoration and history of artistic techniques in the course on the preservation of cultural heritage at the University of Siena , based in Arezzo. He gave and gives courses in history and theory of restoration and history of artistic techniques at the universities of Siena, Florence and Bologna, Università Cattolica di Milano and at the Politechnikum Milano .

He is an honorary academic in the painting class of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence and has written more than 280 publications on the subjects: restoration of paintings, history and theory of restoration, artistic techniques, art history, history of ancient textiles, history of applied arts and participation at national and international conferences.

He has lectured on restoration issues at a number of specialized international cultural institutions such as the Art History Institute in Florence, the Courtauld Institute in London, the Hamilton Kerr Institute at the University of Cambridge , the National Gallery in London , the Metropolitan Museum in New York , the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles , the Yale University Art Gallery, the Louvre in Paris , the Central Institute for Art History in Munich , the National Gallery in Prague , the TAREA-UNSAM in Buenos Aires and the Dresden University of Fine Arts .

He was a member of the Commissione Normal: gruppo Beni Storico-Artistici, Dipinti su tela e tavola . ( Historical-artistic group, paintings on canvas and wood ).

He is a member of the inter-ministerial commission ( MIBAC - MIUR ) for the preparatory work for the accreditation of educational institutions and for the supervision of the restoration theory.

In 2011 he received the national award for Pasquale Rotondi as "Savior of Art", which was sponsored by the city of Sassocorvaro and officially recognized by the MIBAC and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with a special law.

Since February 20, 2012 he has been the soprintendent of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure .
