Marco Paulo (* 21st January 1945 as João Simão da Silva in Mourao , Alentejo ) is a Portuguese pop - / pop - singer .

Life

Marco Paulo first appeared as a child at the city festivals of Alenquer , with songs by the Spanish child star Joselito (* 1943). At the age of 14 he joined the Folk Dance Club (Rancho folclórico) of Alenquer as a singer. From the age of 16 he lived in the up-and-coming industrial city of Barreiro , where he sang in various music associations and received singing lessons at 18. In 1966 he took part in the music festival at Casino Figueira in the seaside resort of Figueira da Foz , where he took third place. It was his first television appearance, and he subsequently made a first record , his 1966 recording Não Sei , a version of a title by the French composer Alain Barrière . This was followed by other festival appearances, such as the Grand Prix of the RTP television song in 1967 ( Grande Prémio RTP da Canção ) and in 1970 as the Portuguese representative at the Singing Olympiad in Athens . In 1978 he received his first gold record for the single Ninguém, Ninguém / Canção Proibida . In 1980 he celebrated his greatest sales success with the single Eu tenho dois amores , which sold over 150,000 times and thus achieved triple gold status.

A large number of publications followed. He appeared frequently on television. His numerous concert tours also took him abroad, where he was particularly successful with the communities of the emigrated Portuguese in Central Europe, Canada and South America. After recording for EMI / Valentim de Carvalho since his first EP in 1966 , he switched to the Portuguese label Zona Música in 2001 , where he recorded a cross-section of the recent music history of Portugal with the album As Nossas Canções - 35 Anos da Nossa Música . The album came to second place in the history charts.

In 2007 he made a slight image change and he changed record label and producer team. After he had built his career on versions of other songs, he now recorded an album with new pieces for the first time, which came to 15th place on the charts. The album O melhor de mim , released a year later, reached the top of the charts. Even after that, his albums hit the charts and he was increasingly present on television again, including a. 2013 in the successful telenovela Bem-vindos a Beirais .

Marco Paulo is now one of the most famous entertainment singers in Portugal. His publications include nearly 30 albums and compilations and over 40 singles and EPs, including a. Duets with Simone de Oliveira and Madalena Iglésias . He was also a frequent guest on entertainment programs on Portuguese television, for which he occasionally hosted talk shows. His career is based on mostly romantic versions of international and Portuguese-speaking successful songs. Occasionally he was parodied as one of the most famous representatives of the old-style entertainment singers, for example in the satirical television series Os Contemporâneos and Gato Fedorento . The latter made fun of him again and again.
