history

Aleksandr Pushkin (1965–1991)

The ship belongs to the Ivan Franko class , Project 301 / SeeFa750, a series of five sister ships for the Soviet Union . It was launched on April 26, 1964 and was delivered to Baltic Shipping Co. on August 14, 1965. She started sailing under the Soviet flag with her home port in Leningrad . The sister ships, of which three have since been scrapped and one has sunk, were almost identical and bore the names of great Georgian, Ukrainian and Russian writers : Ivan Franko , Shota Rustaveli , Taras Shevchenko and Mikhail Lermontov .

The ship is 176.28 meters long and 23.55 meters wide. It has eight decks and a draft of 8.2 meters.

In 1984 the ship was sold to Eastern Shipping Co, home port became Vladivostok . In February 1990 the ship was launched in Singapore .

Marco Polo (since 1991)

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the ship was sold to Orient Lines in 1991 and renamed Marco Polo . The ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau. In 1991 and 1992, the Greek shipyard Neorion in Syros underwent extensive renovations. In addition to the entire interior, the ship's technology was completely renewed and the superstructure changed. Since this conversion, the ship has been measured with 22,080  GT and has an engine output of 15,477 kW; it can reach a maximum cruising speed of 20 knots. With the conversion, the maximum number of passengers was also increased from 650 to 850. The renovation was completed in November 1993.

Since 1998 it has been for Orient Lines Europe Ltd. also registered with its headquarters in the Bahamas.

The Marco Polo 2008

In early 2008 the ship was sold to a Greek company, Global Cruise Lines, and chartered to the German cruise operator Transocean Tours . It then drove mainly for the German, today for the British market at Cruise & Maritime Voyages , after Trancsocean took over. The sale of the Marco Polo also meant the end of the "Orient Lines" era.

Incidents

On the morning of February 15, 2014, the ship was hit by a wave in the English Channel during a violent storm. An 85 year old man died.

During the winter months , the ship is mainly used in the Caribbean , the Mediterranean Sea and the Antarctic , and during the summer months in Norway and the Baltic Sea .

On November 1, 2014, the Marco Polo ran aground in Buksnesfjord (Vestvågøy / Lofoten ) when arriving at around 6.30 a.m. UTC. With the evening flood , she was released around 4 p.m. and was able to continue the journey to Tromsø .

A British retired couple was discovered on December 4, 2018 on the Marco Polo in Lisbon with 9 kg of cocaine in their luggage, which they had hidden in four suitcases on board in St. Lucia .
