Marcos António Elias Santos , short Marcos António , (born May 25, 1983 in Alagoinhas , Bahia ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Career

In August 2002 he moved from his home club in Brazil to FC Porto in Portugal, where he was in the second team. After half a year he moved on loan to Académica Coimbra in the Primeira Liga . After relegation , he moved to league rivals Gil Vicente FC . In 2006 he moved to União Leiria on loan within the league .

After five years, Marcos António left Portugal in the summer of 2007 and moved to AJ Auxerre in the French Ligue 1 . Here he could not prevail and was awarded to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece the following year . Even there he could not establish himself as a regular and returned to Portugal in 2009, where he joined Belenenses Lisbon .

After relegation in 2010 , Marcos António moved to Rapid Bucharest in the Romanian League 1 . In the team of coach Marius Șumudică he became a regular in central defense and qualified fourth for the Europa League at the end of the season . This success was repeated a year later. At the same time, he and his team made it to the 2012 cup final , but lost 1-0 to Dinamo Bucharest there .

For the 2012/13 season Marcos António moved to the Bundesliga for 1. FC Nürnberg . On September 29, 2012 António played his only game in the Bundesliga in the home game against VfB Stuttgart . He was on the starting line-up, but shortly after the start he played the ball back to goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer so unfortunate that Vedad Ibisevic was able to intervene and make it 1-0. When he played a bad back pass a little later, which VfB could not use, he was replaced in the 16th minute. After that, he was no longer used because of a prolonged knee injury. In April 2014, his contract was terminated prematurely. He then moved to Johor Darul Ta'zim FC in Malaysia . With the club from the city of Pasir Gudang , he won the Malaysian Championship five times in a row from 2014 . Furthermore, he won the Supercup three times with them and once each the Malaysia FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup . The greatest achievement was winning the AFC Cup in 2015 . At the end of the 2018 season, he announced his retirement from professional football.
