Mare Boreum (Gradfeld)

The Mare-Boreum - degree field is one of the 30 degree fields of Mars . They were established by the United States Geological Survey ( USGS ). The number is MC-1, the degree field covers the area from 0 ° to 360 ° west longitude and from 65 ° to 90 ° south latitude.

The region includes the northern polar cap , the Korolev Crater , and the Chasma Boreale . The name comes from an area that is now called Planum Boreum , it is a vast plain around the polar cap. Another crater is the Lomonosov crater .

The Lander Phoenix landed on May 25, 2008 at vastitas borealis within the degree field Mare Boreum at 68.218830 ° N and 234.250778 ° E . He collected samples in search of water and former life.
