Margaux (wine region)
The Margaux wine-growing region in the Bordeaux wine-growing region is world-famous for its red wine .
Among the great red wines of the Médoc , the Margaux is characterized by its particular finesse. The undisputed top is the Château Margaux , named after the place .
In addition to Margaux , the municipalities of Cantenac , Soussans and Labarde as well as parts of Arsac also belong to the area of the Margaux appellation . A total of around 1,100 hectares of cultivation area can be planted. Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc , Carménère , Merlot , Malbec and Petit Verdot are permitted as grape varieties in Margaux (as in the entire Bordelais) . After fermentation, the wines must have a minimum alcohol content of 10.5 °. The yield must not exceed 40 hl / ha.
The appellation only applies to red wine. The only significant white wine from Margaux is the Pavillon Blanc from Château Margaux , which is sold as Bordeaux AOC .
Margaux is also known as a female given name. The eldest granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway , who was very fond of Margaux wine , was called for this place - or for this wine - Margaux Hemingway , even though her name was Margot Louise.
