Margus Lattik (pseudonym Mathura , born November 7, 1973 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer and artist.

Life

Lattik went to school in Tallinn and then studied English philology at the University of Tartu . He is currently researching postcolonialism using the example of the work of Derek Walcott , which he compared in an essay with the oeuvre of Jaan Kaplinski .

Between 2000 and 2003, Lattik stayed in India for a total of over a year , including at the Vrindavan Institute for Higher Education in Vrindavan , which is about 8 kilometers north of the city of Mathura , which gave him his literary pseudonym. He was active in the Hare Krishna movement in Estonia for a long time , but has since withdrawn from the organization.

Margus Lattik has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2005 .

Lattik made his debut with poems in the late 1990s as part of the literary group "Erakkond", which included Kristiina Ehin , Mehis Heinsaar , Kalju Kruusa , Aare Pilv and Berk Vaher . He published his first volume of poetry in 2001. Its poetry was partly still strongly influenced by the Krishna movement, and the criticism stated: "The striving for selflessness so characteristic of an Eastern view of life meets a Western-trained brain here ..."

His later poetry was sometimes brought into the vicinity of existentialism , whereby reference was also made to Søren Kierkegaard . From a more general point of view, however, his poetry can be described as natural poetry, and he is now considered "representative of poetry with a thoughtful, introspective undertone."

Lattik is also active as a painter, which is particularly evident in his collection of poems from 2013, Unter der Hand und Wogender Strich , whose poems have often been inspired by the visual arts. He also translates from English (including Derek Walcott ) and Hindi (such as Kabir and Mirabai ). Lattik is also known as a songwriter, where he writes not only Estonian songs but also English-language texts.

In 2016 Lattik surprised with his first novel, which the author himself preferred to describe as a protracted poem.
