Maria Dank (born March 21, 1907 in Schaaksvitte ; † November 7, 2009 in Dessau-Roßlau ) was a German politician ( SED ). She was district administrator of the Saalkreis and mayor of the city of Dessau .

Life

The daughter of a farm worker grew up in Schaaksvitte on the Curonian Lagoon and in Rossitten on the Spit . The father moved the family to Königsberg . Since she did not get an apprenticeship after attending secondary school in Königsberg, she went back to her grandfather on the Curonian Spit and helped him with fishing . Later she found a job as a transport worker in a pulp mill in Königsberg.

She has been active in the workers' sports movement since she was 13 . The workers' sports club sent her to a gymnastics and sports school and worked as a sports teacher until 1933. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , she was dismissed and did illegal work among the fishermen on the Curonian Spit. She became a laborer in a brush factory and in 1935 in an ammunition factory. There she had to do heavy physical labor 30 meters underground. From 1942 to 1945 she was imprisoned several times. At the end of the war she suffered from typhoid fever in Königsberg. In the war she had lost her husband and brother. She was nursed to health in the Soviet Maraunenhof military hospital .

In 1946, Dank went to the Soviet occupation zone and became a member of the SED. She initially worked as an instructor at the trade union trade and supply, then as an instructor in the Halle (Saale) city ​​administration . On January 15, 1951, she was appointed district administrator in the Saalkreis and on November 1, 1951, she was elected mayor of the city of Dessau. She was the successor to Lisa Krause , who was also a resettler and the daughter of a worker. During her one-year study at the party college "Karl Marx" between April 1955 and March 1956, she was represented by Paul Zabel in office. Maria Dank was replaced as Lord Mayor in 1961. From 1951 to 1966 she was a member of the SED district leadership in Dessau and from 1955 to 1963 of the SED district leadership in Halle .

Maria Dank later worked at a secondary school in Dessau. As an 80-year-old she cycled ten kilometers every day. She died at the age of 102.
