The parish church Maria Himmelfahrt is a Catholic church in Koblenz . The parish church was built in 1959 in the district of Asterstein , which was founded later, on the plan of the Holy Rock . She carries the patronage after the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary .

history

The parish church Maria Himmelfahrt was built in 1959 according to plans by the architect Max Christens (1925–2009) from Vallendar in a settlement area that has been growing since the 1930s. After the Second World War, the number of residents rose particularly sharply, so that an emergency church set up in the Goeben barracks soon became too small for the parish founded in 1955. Therefore, an architectural competition was announced, which Christens won with his design. The last external renovation of the church took place in 1991-1992.

Construction and equipment

The parish church is a geosted reinforced concrete building in shell construction . The special feature of the church is the execution of the construction on the ground plan of the Holy Rock , a relic in the Trier Cathedral , which was shown publicly in the year of the church building as part of a pilgrimage (which only happens every few decades). At the same time, he refers to the Marian patronage, since medieval legends report that Mary made her son's robe herself.

The main nave is trapezoidal with transverse arms on the sides of the chancel and consists of nine round-arched steel girders that support the roof made of standing concrete half-tons . The altar stands on a four-step pedestal at the end of the floor sloping towards the east. In the side arms there were originally galleries that were later removed.

The facade and the western sides of the cross arms consist of tall, narrow concrete slat frames. These were filled in in 1969 with brightly colored concrete glass windows that Walter Bettendorf created from Trier . The theme of the entrance front depicts Maria as an apocalyptic woman with a child in her lap who is trying to snatch a seven-headed dragon from her , the windows of the two side arms are purely ornamental. The hanging cross above the altar and the Way of the Cross were made by the Koblenz sculptor Josef Welling .

The hexagonal baptistery on the northwest side is free today, but was originally connected to the church by an intermediate wing.

The organ with 22 registers was built in 1975 by the Oberlinger company from Windesheim . In the years 2014–2015 the badly damaged instrument was extensively renovated by the organ building workshop Oliver Frensch from Koblenz.
