Maria, Princess of Aragon, Queen of Portugal

Maria of Aragón (born June 29, 1482 in Córdoba , † March 7, 1517 in Lisbon ) was an Infanta of Aragón and Castile and, as the second wife of Emanuel the Happy, was titular queen of Portugal from 1500 until her death .

Life

Maria was a daughter of the Catholic kings , i.e. Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon .

She had four siblings, including Queen Joan the Mad of Castile and Princess Catherine of Aragón , the wife of King Henry VIII of England , whose divorce, which was not sanctioned by the Pope , led to the separation of the Anglican from the Catholic Church .

Before her, her older sister, Isabella , had been married to King Emanuel I. But she died in 1498 after the birth of her first son. In 1500 she married her sister's widower in order to maintain dynastic relations between the royal families of Portugal and Spain.
