The Catholic parish church Mariae Namen is the oldest Roman Catholic church and parish in Hanau .

history

The church building was erected in the neo-Gothic style in the years 1842–1850, with construction interruption from 1843 to 1848 . The original front was largely due to the change of dark and red layers of sandstone designed and imitated so that from the Romanesque to the Renaissance in Italy used polychrome incrustation - facades . The architects were Julius Eugen Ruhl and Johann Caspar Stawitz . It was the first Roman Catholic church building in the city after the Reformation . The building plot was the former orchard of the Counts of Hanau , the Bangert, the original address and still today: "Im Bangert", even if the official address today is Dechant-Theodor-Weidner-Platz .

After the county of Hanau had finally adopted the reformed version of the Reformation under Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau-Münzenberg at the end of the 16th century, all subjects had to accept this denomination , because it was: cuius regio, eius religio . It was not until 1787 that the then sovereign, Landgrave Wilhelm IX. from Hessen-Kassel to hold services for believers of Roman Catholic denomination. This first happened in a small prayer room on Gärtnerstrasse. In 1809 the Roman Catholic community of Hanaus was given the hospital church . Whether she used the Hospital Church, however, seems doubtful, as the Roman Catholic service was still held in Gärtnerstrasse in 1811. Starting in 1841, the first own church was built. The building history was difficult: Julius Eugen Ruhl originally planned a three-aisled basilica . However, the half-finished building was damaged by a storm on January 14, 1843, after which the construction site was initially inactive for years and the church was then completed from 1848 to 1850 at a lower cost than the hall church according to plans by Johann Caspar Stawitz.

During the Second World War , the church was partially destroyed again in the air raids on Hanau . Today's church is a modernized, simplified reconstruction from 1952 by Albert Boßlet , to whom historicism was obviously very alien. In front of the striped facade, he placed a sober, businesslike facade that almost completely hides the original striped pattern.

In 1981 the current coffered ceiling was installed and the glazing in the nave was renewed. In 1999, a new sacristy was added in a modern style, which is floor-high around the entire choir .

The church is a cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act for artistic, historical and urban planning reasons.

organ

The large, French-symphonic organ was built in 1989 by the Oberlinger Brothers (Windesheim) organ building company. The initiator was regional cantor Raimund Murch, from whom the disposition also comes. The instrument has 56 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The Spieltrakturen are mechanically, the Registertrakturen electrically. The instrument is used in particular for concert purposes.

Bells

The parish church Mariae Namen has the largest and most extensive Catholic bell and at the same time the lowest pitched bell next to the Marienkirche in Hanau. The chimes were completed in various sections, most recently in 1995 on the 50th anniversary of the destruction of Hanau on March 19, 1945, on St. Joseph's Day by the particularly melodious Gloria Dei bell. The overall ringing sounds after the Salve Regina extended with a top octave, which is rarely found in this pitch in Germany. An impressive sound that deserves a special mention when the big bell rings over the roofs of the city of Hanau at a high festival.
