Maria-Luise Rainer (born April 23, 1959 in Telfes , South Tyrol ) is a former Italian luge athlete and today's luge trainer.

Career

Already in 1976, at the age of 16, Rainer took part in the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck and came in 16th. In 1979 she won a bronze medal in the single seater at the World Championships. In 1980 in Lake Placid , she started her second Olympic Games, but did not reach the goal. In addition, she won the silver medal at the European Championship behind Melitta Sollmann . In the following season she came third in the overall World Cup. In the 1981/82 season Rainer came in second behind Vera Zozuļa , in 1984/85 in third. Rainer celebrated her greatest sporting success in the 1985/86 season, when she won the overall women's luge world cup. In 1986/87 she came in behind Cerstin Schmidt , in 1987/88 behind Julija Antipowa again in second place in the overall World Cup. In 1988 the South Tyrolean won the team bronze medal at the European Championships.

After her active career, she became a toboggan trainer for the Italian Association and coached the Canadian national team. She acts as race director at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and also at all World Cup races. Rainer has been the technical delegate of the Fédération Internationale de Luge de Course at the Junior World Cup for several years .
