The Protestant St. Mary's Church in Rieden , a district of the Rosengarten community in the Schwäbisch Hall district , is a late Gothic religious building.

history

The late Gothic church was built between 1436 and 1469 as a pilgrimage church made of quarry stones on a rock above the village of Rieden by the Haller Council after the Bishop of Würzburg Johann II von Brunn had given permission in 1435. The responsible pastor was the Murrhardt Monastery . The foundation stone was laid on June 16, 1436 and is recorded in a stone relief on the outer wall of the church. In 1438 the church received its roof structure.

Around 1482 the church got a choir , which is attested by an inscription above the south portal of the choir. The churchyard was completely surrounded by a high wall with loopholes until the 19th century . Until 1830 the churchyard was also a cemetery. In 1869 the parish received a rectory, as the parish had been independent since 1843. In 1924 the church was electrified and in 1925 a heating system financed by donations was installed. In 1936/37 the church was renovated inside and out, the choir vaulted . The church facade was renovated in 1968 and the interior of the church in 1978/79. The gallery on the north side was removed, the side altar was moved from the south to the north side and underfloor heating was installed. In 1990 an earlier brewery building was converted into an inn to a community center.

architecture

The higher choir of the church, which protrudes over the nave and is supported from the outside by eight powerful buttresses with gable knobs, is striking. The five-sided choir with a reticulated vault has two and three-part windows with various tracery . The church is about 34.5 m long and 12.3 m wide. The square church tower with a pyramid roof is located at the northern choir entrance. On the west side of the tower, a semicircular spiral staircase protrudes from the facade. The tower has three floors: the sacristy is located below , and a tower room above. On the upper floor there is a bell house with pointed arch windows. The date of the laying of the foundation stone can be found above the richly decorated south portal. The Latin inscription says: ". In the year of the Lord 1436, on the Sunday after St. Veit (= June 15), the first stone was laid for this work" the South Gate of the choir is narrow Gewändesäulen , Becherkapitellen and Gothic jewelry also richly decorated. There are large animal-shaped gargoyles on the four corners of the nave .

The choir and nave are separated by a triumphal arch . The pulpit is on the south side and a side altar on the north side.

Furnishing

Epitaph of Rudolf Christoph Senft von Suhlburg

The wall tabernacle on the north side of the choir dates from around 1440. On the north side there is also a stone epitaph of Rudolf Christoph Sengt von Suhlburg , who died in Antwerp in 1577 as a royal Spanish captain.

A Marian retable from the church is now in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart .

High altar

In the middle of the choir is the wooden shrine of the late Gothic high altar with a predella on a stone altar hall . It was created around 1510 by a Halle-Franconian artist, possibly Hans Beuscher . The closed wings show pictures from the life of Mary. The flight to Egypt and the death of Mary can be seen on the right wing . The left wing shows Mary's visit to Elisabeth and Simeon's meeting with the Holy Family .

With the wings open, you can see the statues of Mary as Queen of Heaven with accompanying angels in the large shrine, as well as Peter and Paul under canopies made of branches . On the board at the top left you can see the Annunciation of the Birth of Christ, at the bottom the Nativity, at the top right the Coronation of Mary, and at the bottom the Adoration of the Three Wise Men. With the predella open you can see the four church fathers Hieronymus, Ambrosius, Gregorius and Augustine. The wings of the predella show the four evangelists with their symbols when they are open ; when the wings are closed you can see Mary's temple passage and the announcement of the birth of Christ.

The side cheeks of the altar are also painted. Links are the St. Veit and fighting St. George with the dragon displayed on the right the Hl. Barbara and St.. Catherine. Even the back was originally painted. Today, however, only traces of this are visible: On the back of the predella, two angels can still be seen holding Veronika's sweat . The imperial eagle and the coat of arms of the city of Hall are depicted on the back of the shrine . The conversation Enge is in the middle of the kneeling Mary holding the body of Christ, and next to her under branches canopies the Hl. Katharina and the Hl. Barbara . Above it stands the blessing Christ with the victory flag.

Side altar

The late Gothic side altar formerly located on the south side was created around 1510-20. The predella has a painting showing the Fourteen Holy Helpers at the engagement of St. Catherine of Siena . The child hands Katharina the ring. In the opened shrine you can see the statues of St. Sebastian , Christ as Man of Sorrows with a cross and a crown of thorns, and St. Leonhard . On the inside of the altar wing, St. Margaret is depicted on the left and St. Dorothea on the right. All figures wear golden robes. Christophorus is depicted above the shrine with the baby Jesus on his shoulders, Laurentius on the left and Sixtus II on the right . When the altar wings are closed, one can see Christ with a cross on the left and Mary on the right pierced by a sword.

Christopher fresco

During the renovation in 1937, a nine-meter-high mural of St. Christopher was discovered and restored on the south side of the nave . It dates from around 1510 and shows Christophorus as a giant, leaning on a tree trunk. The saint carries the naked Christ Child with a billowing cloak through a raging river. In the background a rocky landscape and a tower.

pulpit

The wooden pulpit from the 17th century on the south side of the triumphal arch comes from the Johanniterkirche in Schwäbisch Hall and was installed in the Marienkirche in 1816. On the top of the pulpit ceiling, John the Baptist is depicted, pointing to Christ below. The pulpit itself is painted with the apostle Paul and the four evangelists.

organ

The first organ in the church also came from the Johanniterkirche in Schwäbisch Hall in 1816. In 1902 it was replaced by a new pneumatic organ from the Giengen organ manufacture Gebr. Link . In 1917 the tin pipes had to be given to the armaments industry. They were replaced by new zinc pipes in 1924. In 1927 an electric fan was installed. The organ was revised and expanded in 2003.

reception

Johann Friedrich Reik recorded the sacred building on a drawing and a watercolor .
