Markus Jonsson (born March 9, 1981 in Växjö ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2007 , won the double of the Swedish championship and national cup with AIK in 2009 .

Career

Jonsson played for Växjö BK in his youth before moving to Östers IF in 1998 . After another year in youth, he made his debut in the second division in 1999 and qualified with the team for the newly introduced second-rate Superettan. After he initially played with the club against relegation there, the second division championship succeeded in the 2002 season. In the first division season of 2003 , he was used in 23 of the 26 league games. Despite his two goals, he had to relegate directly back to bottom with the team around Fredrik Bild , Ludwig Ernstsson , Patrik Karlsson and Andreas Ottosson . He remained loyal to the club and was used in the subsequent second division season in all 30 games, with eight goals this season contributed to reaching fifth place in the table. In the 2005 season he ran in 27 league games, with eight goals again he helped the club to return to the Allsvenskan.

Jonsson, however, left Östers IF and switched to fellow promoted AIK . There he won a regular place straight away and was able to enter the scorers' list several times as an accurate penalty taker . Due to his good performance, he also played his way into the notebook of national coach Lars Lagerbäck , who nominated him for a South American tour of the national selection in January 2007. AIK then extended his contract to the end of 2009. Jonsson made his debut in the opening game of the tour in the 2-0 defeat by Venezuela on January 14 of the year in the national jersey, when he came on in the 80th minute for Jeffrey Aubynn . Four days later he was in the starting line-up for the first time in the 2-1 defeat against Ecuador alongside Niklas Sandberg , Matías Concha and Max von Schlebrügge , before he was again in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador at the end of the tour on December 21. January played his third international match.

In the following season Jonsson could not confirm his good form and found himself mainly on the bench from the summer. After he was back in the regular formation towards the end of the season, he retired early in May of the following year in a game against Halmstads BK due to injury. In mid-July he returned to the field after the injury break and established himself again as a regular player. In the 2009 season he played 28 of the 30 season games for AIK and contributed to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions with two goals this season - each penalty converted . He was also in the cup final on the pitch, which ended with goals from Mauro Iván Óbolo and Antônio Flávio with a 2-0 win over IFK Göteborg . Although he was a regular under coach Mikael Stahre , his contract, which was running out at the end of the season, was not extended, so that he was unemployed from January 2010.

Jonsson decided to work abroad. At the end of January 2010 he signed a contract with the Athens club Panionios , which extends over a term of two and a half years.
