Markus Ogorek (* 1974 in Oberhausen ) is a German law scholar and constitutional law teacher. He is director of the Institute for Public Law and Administrative Studies at the University of Cologne and former President of the private EBS University for Economics and Law .

Life

Ogorek studied law at the Ruhr University in Bochum and the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg . From 2000 he was a research assistant and later assistant to the Cologne university professor Stefan Muckel , with whom he obtained his doctorate in 2001 .

Ogorek then completed an LL.M. degree at the University of California at Berkeley ( Boalt Hall ) and worked as a visiting scholar at Duquesne Law School in Pittsburgh before taking the New York bar exam. After completing his legal clerkship at the Regional Court of Cologne , Ogorek continued his studies abroad in 2005 at the University of Edinburgh as a participant in the European Young Lawyers Scheme funded by the British Council .

After several years as a lawyer at the British law firm Linklaters , Ogorek completed his habilitation in 2012 and received the venia legendi for the subjects constitutional and administrative law, private and public business law, European law, foreign public law and comparative law, social law and religious law.

This was followed by a substitute chair at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , and in 2013 Ogorek took over the chair for constitutional and administrative law, administrative sciences, public and private business law at the EBS University of Economics and Law (formerly European Business School). At the same time he was visiting professor at Nanjing University . In the summer of 2014, Ogorek took over the office of dean of the law faculty of the EBS. In 2016 the Senate of the EBS University of Economics and Law elected Ogorek as university president .

In July 2020 Ogorek accepted an offer at the University of Cologne . There he succeeded the German judge at the European Court of Justice , Thomas von Danwitz , as director of the Institute for Public Law and Administrative Studies at the University of Cologne.

Ogorek's activities extend to constitutional law as well as administrative law . A research focus is on hazard prevention law , and he also conducts research in the areas of municipal law and building law . His academic work also includes religious law and social law . Last but not least, he is responsible for the jurisprudence overview on European law for the legal training magazine Juristische Arbeitsblätter .

Memberships / Liaison professor

Ogorek is a member of the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers , the German-American Lawyers Association and the Görres Society for the Care of Science . Since 2009 he has also worked as a liaison lecturer for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .
