Marko Vincenc Lipold
Marko Vincenc Lipold (born January 19, 1816 in Praßberg , Lower Styria , today Slovenia ; † April 22, 1883 in Idria , Lower Carniola, today Slovenia) was a mining specialist and geologist .
Lipold studied philosophy and law at the University of Graz, then at the Bergakademie Schemnitz . From 1841 to 1844 he worked on the geological survey for the Tyrolean geognostic mining society and finally became a chess master in Hall in Tyrol .
In 1843 he carried out numerous height measurements in the Karwendel Mountains, during which he made several first ascents.
From 1849 he worked for the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna, which was founded in the same year . In 1853, with the work of chief geologist Lipold and his auxiliary geologists Dionýs Stur and Carl Ferdinand Peters, the first fundamental research into the Tauern window began . From 1867 Lipold was director of the mercury mine in Idria. In 1874 he published a geological map of the Idria area with an explanatory text.
