The Gamsjoch is a three-peaked mountain in the eastern Karwendel and the main mountain of the Gamsjoch group .

Location and surroundings

The Gamsjoch is enclosed in the west by the Laliderer Tal and in the east by the Enger Tal . In the north it is connected to the Ruederkarspitze ( 2240  m above sea level ) via a narrow ridge , in the south it separates the Gumpenjöchl ( 1974  m above sea level ) from the Gumpenspitze ( 2176  m above sea level ). The Gamsjoch is the main summit of the Gamsjoch group named after it. The summit is divided into three parts, with the western and central summits being about the same height, the eastern summit being lower.

The Gamsjoch drops very steeply in almost all directions, in the northeast almost 500 vertical meters straight into the Trankkar . Only the southern ridge, over which the normal route runs, climbs moderately steeply. Its rock formations on the southeast flank are also striking. The summit offers one of the most impressive views of the Laliderer walls , large parts of the Hinterautal-Vomper chain as well as the Sonnjoch group , the Falken group and the Vorkarwendel .

Climbing opportunities

The Gamsjoch-Westgipfel is a relatively frequently visited summit in the Karwendel, mainly due to its easy accessibility via the Eng. The marked normal route leads from Gumpenjöchl ( 1974  m above sea level ) over the south ridge only in an easterly direction to its eastern edge. Follow this in a north-westerly direction and reach the west summit ( 2438  m above sea level ) over moderately steep crags and scree .

There are two possibilities for the ascent from the Engalm ( 1227  m above sea level ) to Gumpenjöchl:

  • On a marked hiking trail to the Hohljoch ( 1794  m above sea level ), from there further over the Lalidersalm-Hochleger to the northeast and below at the Gumpenspitze crossing to the Gumpenkar and through it to the Gumpenjöchl.
  • From the hiking trail between Eng and Engalmen westwards pathless first across meadows and then at the edge of the forest through some pines and undergrowth into the clearly visible ditch and along this up into the Gumpenkar and through this to the Gumpenjöchl. This increase is not labeled.

The transition from the western to the central summit is exposed and therefore requires a head for heights and surefootedness . The east summit can be reached in half an hour via an exposed ridge, but this section includes climbing points (II) and is therefore reserved for experienced alpinists.

You should plan around four hours for the ascent of over 1250 meters. The descent from the west summit takes about 2.5 hours.

"Summit Cross Affair"

In July 2005, the summit cross that had been newly erected on the west summit by the hosts of the Alpenhotel Eng was broken from its anchorage by strangers and thrown down the mountain. On August 28, 2011 a new summit cross was erected on the Gamsjoch. This was also donated by the hosts of the Wanderhotel Eng.
